How to Bake Sweet Potatoes

How to Bake Sweet Potatoes

Today on The Stay At Home Chef I’m showing you how to make Perfect Baked Sweet Potatoes Bbaking a sweet potato is one of those kitchen basics that everyone should learn how to do. To start you’ll need 4 sweet potatoes. The first question people always have is what’s the difference between a sweet potato and a yam. These have the dark orange flesh inside so isn’t that a yam? I hate to break it to you but you’ve probably never eaten a yam unless you have shopped in an African or Caribbean market.

These are sweet potatoes even though they’re sometimes labeled as yams in the store. This is simply a variety of sweet potato with an orange flesh. There’s another variety of sweet potato commonly found in stores in the United States. it has a lighter interior kind of like a regular potato. Either will work in this recipe. Because sweet potatoes grow in the dirt you want to make sure you clean them off. You’ll want a clean bristle brush like this.

You want to make sure you use one that hasn’t been exposed to any cleaning chemicals. Then we’ll get some water running and scrub these off real good. Give it a good scrub and wash off all of that dirt and we’ll set those dow maybe pat them dry a little bit. You don’t have to worry about too much moisture. Then grab a nice pointy fork. Then you’re gonna take all of your aggression in life out on the sweet potato and give it a few good stabs Well maybe more like 8 to 10. You want to make sure you spread out your stabbing marks here The stabbing pokes little holes in here which gives our sweet potato some ventilation which keeps it from exploding in the oven and bake more evenly. Plus it’s kind of fun! Next you’ll need to grab four little kind of square sheets of aluminum foil. Then we’re gonna place a sweet potato in the middle of each one and wrap it up nice and tight Now sometimes they leak their juices a little bit while they’re baking so you can place them on a four-sided baking sheet if you want. Then we’re gonna bake these in a 400-degree oven for one hour. Now after an hour you should be able to put on an oven mitt and give these a gentle squeeze and feel that they’re soft inside.

That means that we’re ready to open this up. Just be careful so you don’t burn yourself. We’re gonna use a sharp knife to split open the top. Get a good split going there. Then you can use the foil here to gently pop it open then. Just look at that beautiful baked sweet potato inside Then you can grab your fork and kind of mash up some of this inside and bring it out. This is really hot still. Then i’ll season this with a little bit of salt and black pepper Then finish it with a little pat of butter. But then if you have a sweet tooth like me another popular option is to add in some brown sugar, a little bit of cinnamon and that pat of butter.
